Eligibility and General Application Procedures
Letters of Intent, Application Deadlines, and Procedures
The Clinical and Community Health Issues program awards grants from invited applications twice a each year. To be invited to apply, interested researchers must first submit a one or two page letter of intent which outlines the proposed project. Letters will be evaluated for subject matter eligibility and practical benefit. All letters must contain the following:
- A project title.
- The purpose of the research project, specifically stating the research goal(s) and the intended user(s) of the information that would result from the project.
- Overview of the population being studied and research methods.
- The project duration and estimated cost of the project.
- The Principal Investigator’s position, institutional information, and e-mail contact information.
All letters of intent must be on institutional letterhead and signed by the Principal Investigator. Submissions that are longer than the two page maximum will not be considered. Letters of intent and applications must arrive at the office of the Donaghue Foundation by 12:00 noon on their due date. Letters must be submitted via email to wendy@donaghue.org..
Letters of intent are review throughout the year according to the schedule shown below. Based on this review, investigators may be invited to submit an application. All letters will receive a response via e-mail, usually within one month of the stated deadline for receipt. If your LOI is accepted, you will be invited to submit an application for either of the two upcoming application deadlines. The dates will be confirmed in our e-mail to you.

Program Scope and Review Parameters
The Patrick and Catherine Weldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation exists to promote the advancement of medical knowledge of practical benefit to human life. Through the Clinical and Community Health Issues program, the Foundation funds clinical, behavioral and other health-related research projects that address the major medical conditions and social problems influencing the health of individuals, groups and communities. The Foundation is especially interested in clinical, epidemiological and health services research studies that focus on the development and evaluation of more effective methods for preventing, diagnosing and treating illnesses and conditions that have a major impact on the people of Connecticut. The Foundation encourages collaborative, multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research with the potential to make near term improvements in health and health care. The Foundation does not fund research using animals.
Invited applications will be evaluated by the Foundation’s Scientific Review Committee. Following a thorough evaluation of each application, the Committee will make recommendations for grant awards to the Foundation’s Trustees. Final decisions as to which applications will be funded are made by The Bank of America and Lynne Garner the sole Trustees of the Donaghue Foundation.

General Qualifications for the Principal Investigator
To participate in this program, investigators must be contractually associated with, employed by, or have a close, formal and continuous collaborative relationship with an eligible organization in Connecticut at the time of the award. An eligible organization is a nonprofit, tax-exempt academic institution or hospital, agency or other health-related entity. Documentation of the investigator’s affiliation with the applicant institution must be confirmed in writing to the Donaghue Foundation. The agreement must commence on or before the grant award date. The Foundation has no nationality limitations on principal investigators. A grantee may not be a Principal Investigator on more than one Donaghue sponsored project at any given time.
Institutional Commitment
Invited applications must be accompanied by an institutional letter of commitment to support the principal investigator (see Section 11 in application). The letter must detail the nature and extent of the relationship between the principal investigator and the institution and ensure that adequate time, space, equipment and personnel will be available to conduct the proposed research project.
